Our Cities are Heating Up Dangerously – Can We Prepare?

2024 is the hottest year on record, with Europe warming at double the global rate. Urban areas face intensified heatwaves due to congestion and infrastructure. This extreme heat strains critical systems (water, energy, food, transport, communications, healthcare) and threatens human health, particularly vulnerable populations in cities. The UN Secretary-General has called for urgent action to protect at-risk communities, workers, and strengthen urban resilience. The challenge now is finding solutions for cooler, safer cities while building a sustainable, heat-resilient future for urban residents.
